ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of overactive bladder (OAB) in young adults and to explore the influence of OAB on mental health. @*Methods@#Between October 2019 and January 2020, 14,010 anonymous questionnaires were distributed to freshmen at 2 universities in Henan, China. The students came from all over the country. The questionnaire included general items and information necessary to calculate the overactive bladder symptom score, the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, Self-Esteem Scale (SES) score, and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) score. The relationships between the prevalence of OAB and its risk factors were evaluated. @*Results@#The overall prevalence of OAB was 6.0%, with 4.3% of participants characterized as having dry OAB and 1.7% as having wet OAB. The prevalence of mild OAB was 5.5%, and that of moderate OAB was 0.5%; no severe OAB was observed. Higher prevalence rates of OAB were found among women, respondents with constipation, and respondents with primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) (P <0.05). Compared to healthy controls, the OAB group exhibited a higher mean SDS score (52.12±8.986 vs. 47.71±9.399, P<0.001) and mean PSQI score (5.28±2.486 vs. 4.27±2.431, P<0.001), but a lower mean SES score (27.78±3.599 vs. 29.57±4.109, P<0.001). @*Conclusions@#OAB significantly affects the mental health of young adults. Female sex, constipation, and PNE are risk factors for OAB.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#To identify more accurate predictors of upper urinary tract dilatation (UUTD) in neurogenic bladder (NB) children, we studied the relationship among urodynamic parameters at different bladder filling stages, detrusor leak point pressure (DLPP) and UUTD. @*Methods@#A total of 158 children (3–16 years) with NB were included and then divided into 2 groups according to whether their NB diagnosis was complicated with UUTD: the UUTD group (39 patients) and those without UUTD group (control group, 119 patients). The bladder filling phase was divided into 3 equal parts: the early, middle, and end filling stages. The bladder compliance (BC) and detrusor pressure (△Pdet) at each phase and DLPP at the end filling stage were recorded. @*Results@#A BC8 cm H2O in the early stage, 20 cm H2O in the middle stage and 25 cm H2O in the end stage are more sensitive than △Pdet >40 cm H2O in the end stage (82%, 85%, 85%, vs. 49%). A DLPP cutoff value of 20 cm H2O showed higher sensitivity for predicting UUTD than 40 cm H2O. @*Conclusions@#Low BC and a high △Pdet in the middle and end filling stages are more accurate factors than classic indicators for predicting UUTD. In addition, a DLPP value of >20 cm H2O in the end bladder filling stage shows high sensitivity.

ABSTRACT

Plants with alien genomic components (alien chromosomes / chromosomal fragments / genes) are important materials for genomic research and crop improvement. To date, four strategies based on trait observation, chromosome analysis, specific proteins, and DNA sequences have been developed for the identification of alien genomic components. Among them, DNA sequence-based molecular markers are mainly used to identify alien genomic components. This review summarized several molecular markers for identification of alien genomic components in wheat, cabbage and other important crops. We also compared the characteristics of nine common molecular markers, such as simple sequence repeat (SSR), insertion-deletion (InDel) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). In general, the accuracy of using a combination of different identification methods is higher than using a single identification method. We analyzed the application of different combination of identification methods, and provided the best combination for wheat, brassica and other crops. High-throughput detection can be easily achieved by using the new generation molecular markers such as InDel and SNP, which can be used to determine the precise localization of alien introgression genes. To increase the identification efficiency, other new identification methods, such as microarray comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) and suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH), may also be included.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the attitudes of prostate cancer (PCa) patients towards postoperative penile rehabilitation and their influencing factors.@*METHODS@#Seventy-nine PCa patients underwent radical prostatectomy from January through June 2017 and all received a questionnaire investigation before surgery on IIEF-5 and their attitudes towards postoperative penile rehabilitation. We analyzed the reasons for the patients' rejection of postoperative penile rehabilitation.@*RESULTS@#Totally 56 (71%) of the patients accepted and the other 23 (29%) refused postoperative penile rehabilitation. The factors influencing their attitudes towards penile rehabilitation mainly included age (P = 0.023), income (P = 0.040), tumor stage (P = 0.044), and preoperative sexual activity (P = 0.004). The patients who accepted penile rehabilitation had significantly higher IIEF-5 scores than those who refused it (14.75 ± 0.88 vs 8.48 ± 1.16, P = 0.000 2). During the follow-up period, only 29 (36.7%) of the patients bought the vacuum erection device but not the other 50 (63.3%). The tumor stage (P = 0.004), income (P < 0.01) and preoperative androgen-deprivation therapy (P = 0.039) significantly influenced the patients' decision on the purchase of the device. Relevant admission education achieved a 45% decrease in the number of the patients unwilling to accept penile rehabilitation for worrying about its negative effect on cancer treatment, a 25% decrease in those rejecting penile rehabilitation because of age, and a 20% decrease in those refusing it due to the tumor stage. The cost of treatment was an important reason for the patients' rejection of postoperative penile rehabilitation.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The tumor stage and income are the main factors influencing PCa patients' decision on postoperative penile rehabilitation. Relevant admission education and reduced cost of rehabilitation are important for popularization of postoperative penile rehabilitation in PCa patients.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the clinical activity of abiraterone plus prednisone in docetaxel-naïve and docetaxel-resistant Chinese patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). A total of 146 patients with docetaxel-naïve group (103 cases) and docetaxel-resistant group (43 cases) were enrolled from the Shanghai Cancer Center (Shanghai, China) in this retrospective cohort study. The efficacy endpoints were prostate-specific antigen response rate, prostate-specific antigen progression-free survival, clinical/radiographic progression-free survival, and overall survival in response to abiraterone plus prednisone. Significantly higher prostate-specific antigen response rate was found in docetaxel-naïve group (54.4%, 56/103) compared to docetaxel-resistant group (34.9%, 15/43) (P = 0.047). In addition, significantly higher median prostate-specific antigen progression-free survival (14.0 vs 7.7 months, P = 0.005), clinical or radiographic progression-free survival (17.0 vs 12.5 months, P = 0.003), and overall survival (27.0 vs 18.0 months, P = 0.016) were found in docetaxel-naïve group compared to docetaxel-resistant group, respectively. The univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that lower albumin and visceral metastases were independent significant predictors for shorter overall survival. To sum up, our data suggested that abiraterone plus prednisone was efficient in both docetaxel-naïve and docetaxel-resistant Chinese patients. Moreover, higher PSA response rate and longer overall survival were observed in the docetaxel-naïve group, which suggested that abiraterone was more effective for docetaxel- naïve patients than for docetaxel failures.

ABSTRACT

It is reported that energy metabolism is the core feature of tumor cells. This study is aimed to investigate the regulatory effect of two flavonoids( glabridin and quercetin) on energy supply and glycolysis of breast cancer cells, and provide reference for developing some anticancer herbal drugs with the function of regulating tumor energy metabolism. Based on the characteristics of each pathway during energy metabolism,in the present study, the triple negative breast cancer tumor cells( MDA-MB-231) were selected to investigate the effects of glabridin and quercetin on the energy metabolism of breast cancer cells and discuss the possible mechanisms from the following five potential targets: glucose uptake, protein expression of glucose transporter 1( GLUT1),adenosine triphosphate( ATP) level, lactate dehydrogenase( LDH) activity, and lactic acid( LD) concentration. The results showed that both quercetin and glabridin could decrease the glucose uptake capacity of breast cancer cells by down-regulating the protein expression of GLUT1. Quercetin had no significant effect on LDH activity and LD concentration; it did not affect the glycolysis process, but increased the intracellular ATP level. Glabridin decreased the activity of LDH and reduced LD concentration, thereby inhibiting the glycolysis metabolism of breast cancer cells. Therefore, both quercetin and glabridin can regulate the energy metabolism of breast cancer cells and can be used as potential anticancer agents or anti-cancer adjuvants.

ABSTRACT

Cellular senescence refers to a process that cellular proliferation and differentiation modulated by the multiple stimulating factors gradually decline. Aging cells present the irreversible stop of proliferation and differentiation and change in secretory function because the cell cycle of aging cells is steadily blocked at some point. It has have been shown that cellular senescence plays an important role in the occurrence and development of liver diseases. In this paper, we review the advances in relations between cellular senescence and liver diseases.

ABSTRACT

Semen stain identification is one of the crucial tasks for collection of criminal evidence by forensic techniques. Substances such as DNA and RNA contained in semen stains can serve as a source of personalized evidence targeting the suspect. Therefore, semen stain identification is vital to inferring the case attributes and the facts of the crime. The conventional methods of forensic stain identification focus on the detection of specific-function protein and/or high-content protein, such as alkaline phosphatase and PSA. Although the specificity of such protein markers is relatively high, these methods yield a limited rate of success for several factors, including poor stability, low sensitivity of the target protein, and possible subjectivity of the performer. In order to overcome these limitations, new technologies such as Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry for protein markers, sperm-specific aptamer, mRNA, microRNA, and DNA methylation assays have been studied and recommended by many investigators. These new technologies are paving a new ground for personalized trace analysis and even for detection of over-timed specimens.

ABSTRACT

The DNA structures could be altered or even damaged by exogeous or endogenous factors during cell proliferation. Failure of effective and timely repair will lead to cell cycle arrest or apoptosis. By taking the advantage of the quick proliferation of cancer cells, DNA damage induction, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis promotion have become important strategies for ant-cancer chemotherapy. Previous reports showed that an array of natural compounds inhibit cancer cell proliferation by inducing DNA damage, which have therapeutic potentials for anti-cancer drug research and development.

ABSTRACT

Melanoma is an intractable cancer that is aggressive, lethal, and metastatic. The prognosis of advanced melanoma is very poor because it is insensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The incidence of melanoma has been ascending stably for years worldwide, accompanied by increasing mortality. New approaches to managing this deadly disease are much anticipated to enhance the cure rate and to extend clinical benefits to patients with metastatic melanoma. Due to its high degree of immunogenicity, melanoma could be a good target for immunotherapy, which has been developed for decades and has achieved certain progress. This article provides an overview of immunotherapy for melanoma.

ABSTRACT

We performed a retrospective, case-control study to evaluate whether the urine flow acceleration (UFA, mL/s(2)) is superior to maximum uroflow (Qmax, mL/s) in diagnosing bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this study, a total of 50 men with BPH (age: 58±12.5 years) and 50 controls (age: 59±13.0 years) were included. A pressure-flow study was used to determine the presence of BOO according to the recommendations of Incontinence Control Society (ICS). The results showed that the UFA and Qmax in BPH group were much lower than those in the control group [(2.05±0.85) vs. (4.60±1.25) mL/s(2) and (8.50±1.05) vs. (13.00±3.35) mL/s] (P<0.001). According to the criteria (UFA<2.05 mL/s(2), Qmax<10 mL/s), the sensitivity and specificity of UFA vs. Qmax in diagnosing BOO were 88%, 75% vs. 81%, 63%. UFA vs. Omax, when compared with the results of P-Q chart (the kappa values in corresponding analysis), was 0.55 vs. 0.35. The prostate volume, post void residual and detrusor pressure at Qmax between the two groups were 28.6±9.8 vs. 24.2±7.6 mL, 60.4±1.4 vs. 21.3±2.5 mL and 56.6±8.3 vs. 21.7±6.1 cmH2O, respectively (P<0.05). It was concluded that the UFA is a useful urodynamic parameter, and is superior to Qmax in diagnosing BOO in patients with BPH.
